Cunwei village is a mountainous village on the border between Zhejiang province and Fujian province. This remote village has become quite bustling in recent days. Many villagers from neighboring villages come and gather here. What’s happened to this small village?

Taishun is a mountainous town in Wenzhou which is crisscrossed by rivers and mountains. Bridges are the route people must take to go to other places. The local people are very familiar with the bridges and a new bridge is to be built shortly in the town.

Timber arch lounge bridges utilize a special structure and they can be seen only on the borders between Zhejiang province and Fujian province. Now such a bridge is going to be built here.

The lounge bridges in Taishun were mostly built in the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the past 100 years, no such bridges have been built. Where are the bridge craftsmen? In order to find these craftsmen, Xue Yiquan with Taishun Museum of Civilization visited villages and examined various bridges, hoping to find some clues.

Dong zhiji was one of the craftsmen who built the bridge, but he only participated in building the lounge that covers the bridge.

Xue yiquan was disappointed but he continued to look for other craftsmen. However, it turned out that in Taishun nobody could build the bridge. In order to explore the traditional bridge-building skill, Xue yiquan decided to have Mr. Dong make a bold attempt.

When Mr. Dong was 13 years old, he had seen people build a timber arch lounge bridge. He was interested in the skills applied so he watched and remembered every step in the process of building the bridge. He was determined to build a lounge bridge himself but he didn’t get any such chance.

Now, fifty years later, his dream would finally come true. Mr. Dong was exited but he was also worried. After all, he had never built such a bridge.

There was a lounge bridge named Tongle bridge in Cunwei village but it was destroyed by a flood at the end of the Qing dynasty. After careful discussion, people decided to ask Mr. Dong to rebuild the bridge. Mr. Dong observed the damaged bridge and put forward a new idea.

In order to guarantee the safety of the new bridge, Mr. Dong thought it should be built on the lower reaches of the river. He designed a lounge bridge with a span of 23 meters. The lounge over the bridge weighs more than 500 kilograms but there are no piers under the middle of the bridge. Could the timber which is less than 10 meters long sustain the weight of the bridge? Is the design workable?

Mr. Dong’s design was approved by experts. But people still wondered if the material could sustain a weight of more than 1,000 jin.

After repeated examination and revision, the bridge frame was finally set. The day of building the bridge was coming but Mr. Dong still felt worried.

Craftsmen put boards on the both sides of the river and built the bridge from two ends. The skill was called Niutouzhuang. Even a small error in the length of the boards and the occluding rivets could ruin all previous efforts. Could Mr. Dong find another way?

Was the idea workable? Villagers began to have their doubts about Mr. Dong. Could he stand the hard work? Was the method workable? After all, it was the first time they had attempted to build a bridge in this way.

Tongle Bridge was finally completed and Mr. Dong realized a dream that had lasted half a century. Looking at the bridge, Mr. Dong still couldn’t help but weep quietly.

By building the bridge, Mr. Dong realized his life-long dream and at the same time, passed on the traditional skills to the younger generation.
